Different Layouts Of A Name Card

A quality name card printing is above all a relevant and adapted layout. In this respect, there are many possibilities, each with its own specificities.

The classic format

The classic format revolved around size of 126 x 80 mm, called previously «format 30». This format has evolved over time and modes. The displayed content on the business card has evolved nowadays and has sometimes even become standardized. The standard size of a 24 hours name card printing is, therefore, a rectangle of 85 mm by 54 mm: a sensible size since it is similar to that of a credit card (also called the “CB format”) and can, therefore, fit very easily into any wallet or pocket.

Portrait or landscape format

This classical format is appreciated, like the current printing method of documents, such form can be printed either vertical (portrait) or horizontal (landscape). However, the landscape format remains the most adequate one of the two, as its capable of receiving a very ample amount of information, while remaining readable. Nevertheless, because it’s such a classic format, it may lack originality.

Business cards designed with the intention of giving a prominent place to the logo, should opt for a portrait orientation, provided that their image size is within the framework of this type of layout. However, the downside of this format, is that it makes it harder to fit all of the required data on the width of the board (of the order of 50 mm). As a matter of fact, information must remain legible. Thus, in case of a somewhat long e-mail address, it is preferable to use the landscape format.

The double card format

The basic principle of this card is that its printed on two sides. It therefore has, for the same size, a double surface, allowing for the communication of more information. It is however, required to make sure not to load the bottom of each side, and to ensure the use of a coherent graphic charter between the two sides. Finally, it is of a crucial importance to design this card, while keeping in mind that one side remains devoted to essential information.

The square format

Printers can offer and vary the layout of name cards almost infinitely. Nowadays, companies and even individuals, sometimes self-employed, distribute a square card format, either 70 x 70 mm or 55 x 55 mm. These cards are more personal and customizable. They are often the subject of a specific conception and a harmonious organization of their content. As a result, they are more expensive and produced in smaller quantities.

Open format

Some printers now offer an open format, a rectangle of 17 cm by 5.4 cm. But the use of this «double-card» is more associated with a subscription card or a sponsorship coupon. This type of layout can be perceived as original and relevant in some industries.

The rounded corners format

Without distorting the standard layout (and its benefits), it is possible to choose rounded corners on 1, 2 or 4 sides. Such a card in CB format therefore looks almost exactly like a real credit card (in terms of form).

Mini card format

Business cards can finally adopt smaller layouts, either by “artistic” choice or by the need to produce a larger amount of these cards. The famous Moo MiniCards with a format of 7 cm by 2,8 is widely used.
