UI and UX: What is The Difference Between These Two?

UI and UX are terms that are often used nowadays. But what do UI and UX mean? Are they the same? First, let’s try to understand what UI and UX stand for. UI is User Interface, while UX is User Experience. Both relate to the appearance of a website or an application. From the name, it can be concluded that these two are different things. Here are the differences.

Focus
The difference between UI and UX can be seen from the focus of the design. The focus of UI design is on visual elements. UI delivers the perfect mix of visual design, design for interaction, and information. The focus on UX is on the conceptual aspects of the design process. How the application works and responds to users when interacting with it. UX creates a logical structure and flow of products from one page to the next.

Design process
Because it focuses on user experience, the UX design process is based on user research to produce products that are liked and needed by target users. The process also goes through many stages and requires the role of many parties, one of which is a UX researcher. After doing research, designers design sketches with wireframes and prototypes. Meanwhile, UI design also requires research. However, the research is to create an attractive design that fits the concept. UI designers also need to design a model by creating a mockup first.

Consideration
In the process, UI and UX have different considerations or thought processes. UI considers the brand or business owner side. A UI designer will incorporate branding and business identity into the elements created. On the other hand, UX focuses on creating a pleasant experience for users. That’s why UX will always care about the perceptions and needs of its users.

Design principle
The UI uses a principle called user-centered. Actually, this principle is similar to UX. However, the user-centered is more specific. Psychology and humanities are used to define the target audience. So, the chances of that person liking the results are even greater. UX has a principle called human-centered. This principle emphasizes the use of psychological theories and other humanities to create products. The knowledge needed is to be able to predict the user response to something. By utilizing it, the product that is made matches the user’s habits.

Tools
For UI designers, there are lots of software to create mockup designs. Such as Balsamiq, Flinto, Mockplus, Principle, Frames X, Adobe Illustrator, and many more. These applications are usually equipped with a feature to test the design results directly on a smartphone or a PC. UX designers need prototyping software to create interactive application designs. Some examples of UX designer prototyping software are Adobe XD, Figma, InVision, Axure, Sketch, and others.

Skills
Being a UI designer and UX designer requires skills. Some of the skills needed by a UI designer are graphic design, design branding, creative thinking, and convergent thinking. These skills are for designing product displays to make them look attractive and easy to interact with. While a UX designer is responsible for making product design with a user approach to make it easy to use. Therefore, they must have the skills to do research, analytical thinking, problem-solving, critical thinking, and creative thinking.

Many people think that UI and UX are the same, even though they are different but connected.
